| Amsterdam, The Jordaan is being
renovated in the 1931 in color! |
||||
| This is a colorized and restored film about Amsterdam's Jordaan quarters
almost a century ago. The Amsterdam municipal council took the decision around 1930 to
overhaul this dilapidated and impoverished neighborhood. The film shows fascinating images of how the poor live in and on the streets of the Jordaan. The warehouses on the Rapenburgergracht, the Montelbaanstoren, primitive shops, a "sharpensliep" and the Jodenhout gardens behind the houses are also shown. It is a misunderstanding to think that the Jordaan is/was a Jewish neighborhood. |

| A restored, originally very damaged film about beautiful Amsterdam and its
canals almost a century ago. The worst damaged frames have been manually deleted. This
causes the film to slightly jump a bit while being played. Without these repairs the film
would have been hard to watch. | Amsterdam's bustling harbor over a
century ago in 1919 in color! [A.I. enhanced & colorized] |
||||
| Highly interesting views of Amsterdam's bustling harbor over a century ago. In 1919 Amsterdam still had open access to the sea via the Zuiderzee. After the Afsluitdijk was constructed and opened on 23 september 1933 Amsterdam lost its connection with the Northsea via the Zuiderzee which became a lake called the IJsselmeer. Fortunately its harbor was still in direct connection with the North Sea via the 21 km long Noordzee Kanaal which was dug in the 19th century and opened in 1896. Till this day all ships have to pass the huge sea locks at IJmuiden. For more details see the timeline below. Source: Beeld En Geluid Music: Claude Signet, Howard Harper-Barnes & David Celeste. | Amsterdam's harbor in 1924 in color De Amsterdamse haven in 1924 in kleur |
||||
| Very interesting film about Amsterdam's busy harbour nearly a century ago.
This is originally a film in three parts from which my previous film about Amsterdam's old
city center was derived. Unfortunately some parts of the original footage were damaged.
Therefore the most damaged frames have been removed by means of software. Amsterdam is the second largest harbour in the Netherlands after Rotterdam. In past centuries it was connected to the North Sea via the Zuiderzee. However, in 1928 the Zuiderzee was closed-off by a 28 km long dyke ("De Afsluitdijk"). Fortunately Amsterdam still has access to the Northsea via a 21km long canal ("Het Noordzeekanaal") that was dug mainly by hand between 1863 and 1876 when it was opened by the Dutch King Willem III. In another of my films you can see the construction of the huge sea locks in this canal. At 16:19 you see a huge model of the Amsterdam harbour (it looks like an aerial view). Source B&W footage: Beeld En Geluid Music: None (silent film). I simply don't have enough nice copyright-free music to fill such a long film. | Amsterdam Rokin,
before, during and after the canal was filled-in in 1934 |
||||
| The Rokin is an important thoroughfare in Amsterdam. Between 1933 and 1936,
the canal on the Rokin (between the Spui and the Dam) was filled in in two stages. This
film shows the situation before damping and during the first phase. It is especially fascinating to see how an older man controls a small ferry (also called a vulture ferry) that travels the short distance from shore to shore via a steel cable. The side of the ferry says "Turmac", advertising for a cigarette brand. It is surprising how little can be found about this ferry on the Internet. As far as can be determined, the creation of parking spaces was the only reason why the municipal council decided to fill in the canal. That the muted part was used well for this purpose is clearly visible in this film. In recent years, Rokin was the scene of the construction of the North-South metro line. The construction went far from without problems. Serious subsidence occurred, causing damage to the buildings along the Rokin. In recent years, calls have been made to restore the old canal to its former glory, but to date these plans have been successfully opposed by local entrepreneurs. capital of Amsterdam was liberated on the 8th of May 1945 from the German occupation by
Canadean troups that entered the city via the Berlage bridge. The following festivities
lasted the whole summer of 1945. For more detailed information, please listen to the spoken comments in the film itself. Music: Bonnie Grace, Howard Harper Barnes. Source: Beeld En Geluid. |
