Rotterdam as it was during the last century [A.I. Enhanced & Colorized] |
Unique footage of old Rotterdam before WW-II in the 1930s |
Unique footage of the Dutch city of Rotterdam before WW-II. In order to force the Dutch government to capitulate, the Germans bombed the city of Rotterdam on 14 May 1940. Although the bombardment only lasted about 15 minutes, it devastated almost the entire old city. Nearly 1000 inhabitants perished and 80,000 people became homeless. After the war Rotterdam was rebuilt almost from scratch and thus is one the most modern cities in The Netherlands as regards architecture. The first half of the film shows a panoramic view of old Rotterdam, filmed from the tower of the Laurenskerk. The second half concentrates mainly around the Holplein and the Delftse Poort. |

Rotterdam Fishmarket near the Blaak in 1920s in color! Rotterdamse vismarkt bij de Blaak rond 1920 in kleur |
A.I. Enhanced and colorized (slightly damaged) film about the fishmarket at
De Blaak in the Dutch harbour city of Rotterdam a century ago in color. Rotterdam lies on the West coast of The Netherlands and still has one of Europe's most important harbors. It connects the North Sea via the Nieuwe Waterweg to the main rivers like the Maas and Rhine that flow deep into Europe. The film shows the fishermen who sell their catch to local fish traders as wel as to the general public. Compared to todays standards the handling and packaging of the fish is crude and the hygiene measures are highly questionable. But life was entirely different then and should not really be viewed through todays eyes, This film was made twenty years before the destruction of the entire old center of Rotterdam as the result of a bombardement by the Germans on the 14th of May 1940. The liberation of the Dutch city of Rotterdam in 1945 in color! De bevrijding van Rotterdam in 1945. |
Like The Hague, Rotterdam was liberated on 8 May 1945 from German rule during
the Second World War. The German capitulation is then a fact and the retreat of the German troops begins immediately. The entry of the Canadians leads to delirious joy. Handkerchiefs and flags are waved and flowers and serpentines are thrown. Although Germany capitulated on May 4, it remained restless in the city until May 8 and the withdrawal of the Germans was chaotic, partly because they did not want to surrender to the Rotterdammers but to the Allies. On May 7, the German commander has still not capitulated, but commanders of the Interior Forces take up residence in the town hall. The mayor and aldermen of the NSB and some other wrong leaders are arrested. Rotterdam suffered like no other city during this war. Already at the beginning of the war, the old center was almost completely bombed by the Germans on 14 May 1940, with the aim of forcing the Dutch government to capitulate. In this film, the joy of the people of Rotterdam bursts from the screen. We see the vehicles of the liberators moving through the battered city, cheered by the crowds that have lined up all along the route. A large group of nurses even climbs on the army vehicles and gets carried away in the column of army vehicles. Music: Edgar Hopp - To The Ends Of The Earth Source: Beeld En Geluid. |
